Weather the Storm (or ‘learn something for next time’)

I’ve had a lot of thoughts to blog, just not a lot of time. Not to make excuses… if you followed my twitter you’d know I try to stay busy.

Rubyconf was great, my talk was ok, B+ maybe, I learned some lessons, next talk will benefit, lots of cool smart people, trying to explain Puppet to Ruby developers is always interesting. I gave another version of the talk at the Utah Ruby Users Group.

Ignite Salt Lake was epic, but apparently the AV capture was a fail.  Total lighting fail and everyone is really dark in the video. This is sad because the talks really were excellent.  The strategy is to try some image processing and see if there is anything worth salvaging, and if not just take the audio and match it with the slides. Another lesson learned, next time will be better.

My wife is traveling almost every week lately for interviews and leaving me home with the boys.  She is trying to match in an opthalmology program and the whole process is black magic, which means a bit of stress and we have no idea where we will be in 6-18 months.

Part of me wants to stay here in Salt Lake City, because I love the high mountain desert and will always have roots here, but I always like new things and it would be nice to get acquainted with a new town.

I’ll be glad when the process is over one way or another.

There seems to be an upsurge in the Agile backlash lately, but I have personally made most of the same observation/critiques before.  Should make the next Agile Roundtable discussion more fun.  On a related note, there seems to be an upswing of ‘pastry‘ searches on blogs (maybe just the holidays).  Oh well, popularity drives dilution, and now I really really really want to have an AgileFringe conference.

I feel some good posts percolating… (next time will be better…)

Burn Baby Burn

*Context*

I’m working as part of a group to organize an Ignite event in Salt Lake City.  Herlo let me have 5 minutes following one of the morning keynotes at the Utah Open Source Conference to do a short presentation on the Ignite format and what we are trying to do.  Ignite is associated with O’Reilly publishing, and while it might not be weird enough for Giles, an Ignite night in SLC should still be fun and hopefully gets some of the more interesting people in Utah together and talking.  I threw these links up to provide examples of Ignite talks I enjoyed.

Ignite it.

These are a few of my favorite Ignite talks.

Making the technical interesting

Businessiness stuff

Artistic/Burners

Make a video

There are links to more Ignite talks in the results…

Ignite FOOCamp

I made a plea for help at FOOCamp. My current thoughts and understandings on managing business and people.

Business Philosophy, or something. . . Enjoy

(I would have posted the slides that night but apparently slideshare hates keynote and ppt/pdf generated from keynote.)

Keepin’ On

Been keeping busy, just checking in. . .

The conferences in SF (Velocity, Cloudcamp, Structure) were a great time to learn, to teach, and make friends. Puppet got a lot of love, but we still have a much grander view of the potential for the project. Puppet is still basically an awesome working prototype, the next year should see improved performance, clean and clear points for integration and a lot more reporting.

Luke showed a video of a GUI reporting application that aggregates and helps visualize Puppet’s reporting. We had a an email the next morning from a Fortune 500 company about getting into the closed beta. Looks like another large internet property is also going to be in.

This last week, I did a tiny bit of development for the 0.24.5 release and finally restyled reductivelabs.com to be a bit cleaner. I also worked on some slides about Reductive Labs for OATV StartupCamp and threw around some ideas for an Ignite talk for Foo Camp, which are both next week.

I was thinking about ‘What Would Machiavelli Do?’ because Niccolo always gets a bad wrap, but now I’m leaning towards ‘Business Advice From Western Philosophers’. (I’d still throw in some Machiavelli.) I’m going to struggle to boil things down to 20 slides but I think I can make an engaging talk. (I could probably spin at least half a dozen fun talks out with all the different philosophical schools, probably starting with ‘Existentialists‘. And then there is always the Taoists or the Sufis. . .) Feel free to make suggestions in the comments.

StartupCamp and FOOCamp are another great opportunity to get out and spread the Puppet word, but also to learn from a lot of smart people who are doing interesting things. I’m sure my mind will be buzzing this time next week, and some of that is bound to generate some interesting posts. Right?

I also am going to be at Agile 2008, and on that note, some really nice thoughts about software development and infrastructure are starting to crystallize, stay tuned. . . I promise something meaty before StartupCamp starts on the 10th.
